Dr Sarah Zipp is an Associate Professor at Mount St. Mary's University in Maryland, USA. She is also the founder of Power to Play, Period - a campaign to support menstrual health education for coaches and athletes. Her research and teaching explores issues of social justice and leadership in sport, including gender equality, sport for development, globalization, ethics and environmental concerns. She has published academic articles, media articles, book chapters and research reports. Dr Zipp co-edited the Routledge Handbook of Global Sport (2020) and was named the Early Career Researcher of the Year (2020) by the Journal of Sport for Development.
She has taught at universities around the globe, with positions in the USA, Netherlands and UK. Dr Zipp has also taught on programmes at the Singapore Institute of Management and in the Tokyo Olympic legacy programme at Tsukuba University in Japan. At Stirling, she teaches in both the undergraduate and graduate programmes. Her teaching roles include: Sport Governance, Managing the Business of Sport, Research Project (supervision), Fundraising, Sport for Development, Media and Communications, Sport and the environment and Youth Sport.
Dr Zipp hosted the Go with the Flow workshop on Menstrual Health in Sport and Physical Activity in 2020. This workshop was funded by the Wellcome Trust Foundation as a part of the UK Menstruation Research Network. Her public engagement work includes lectures, seminars and consultancies at the UK Department of Education, the Gender Equality Toolkit for Generation Z (an EU Erasmus + project), the International Working Group on Women in Sport (a UNESCO partner), the Wellcome Trust Foundation (UK), the Big Tent Festival (UK) and the Saudi Arabian Olympic Academy. She has also worked with numerous charities on sport for development, including organisations in the UK, Zambia, Bosnia & Hercegovina, Barbados and St. Lucia.
Dr Zipp earned her PhD in Development Studies at the International Institute for Social Studies at Erasmus University in the Netherlands. She studied sport as human capability development in the Caribbean as a part of the Economics of Development and Emerging Markets (EDEM) research programme.
